A resolution to declare April 2024 as Financial Literacy Month, led by U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and a bipartisan group of colleagues, has successfully passed the U.S. Senate. Senator Capito emphasized the importance of financial literacy, stating, “Financial literacy can mean a lifetime of security. Making sure that financial education resources are available, especially for our youth, can help individuals make informed decisions to best prepare for the future."
Joining Senators Capito, Scott, and Reed in introducing the resolution were a number of other senators, including Ron Wyden, Dick Durbin, Susan Collins, and more. The full text of the resolution is available for review.
In West Virginia, efforts to promote financial education have been ongoing. The West Virginia Board of Education recently approved an amendment requiring high school students to complete a full credit course in personal finance during their junior or senior year. Originally mandated as a half credit, this requirement has been upgraded to a full credit starting from the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.
