U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito from West Virginia has joined a bipartisan effort to introduce sanctions targeting Russia and its supporters amid ongoing tensions in Ukraine. Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut are leading an initiative to apply primary and secondary sanctions on Russia. The proposed sanctions aim to hold Russia accountable should it refuse meaningful peace negotiations with Ukraine or attempt any actions, including military invasions, that could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The legislation includes a 500 percent tariff on imports from countries purchasing Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other goods as a countermeasure. The sanctions have garnered support from multiple senators, with a list of cosponsors that includes Dan Sullivan, Dick Durbin, and Angus King among others.

Additionally, similar legislation is being proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a group of representatives including Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Quigley, Joe Wilson, and Marcy Kaptur.
