U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito visited Hinton, West Virginia, on August 29, 2025, to take part in the ribbon cutting for Batteau Beach at Hinton Landing. The site has been redeveloped to include amenities such as a trailhead, river access with a kayak launch, a playground, shelter, and picnic tables.
Senator Capito played a role in securing federal funding for the project through the Congressionally Directed Spending process. During the event she said: “With today’s ribbon cutting, Batteau Beach is now officially reborn. This new attraction is a critical aspect in making Hinton a true destination that appeals to more tourists and visitors alike. I was proud to work along-side Mayor Scott in securing funding for this project through the Congressionally Directed Spending process. Initiatives like this have the potential to revitalize communities, create economic development, and improve the lives of our residents. Today’s event is a major accomplishment, and I look forward to seeing all of the ways families and visitors from all over enjoy wild and wonderful West Virginia.”
Mayor Jack Scott also commented on the impact of the improvements: “Thank you to Senator Capito for her work to secure funding for Hinton Landing and Batteau Beach, which will allow our town to capitalize on the New River Gorge national park designation, grow our recreation economy, and enhance quality of life for the entire community – not just for visitors, but for all who all this place home.”
The upgrades are expected to support local tourism connected with attractions like New River Gorge National Park.
