Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito engaged in a discussion with FBI Director Kash Patel during a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing. The focus was on the president’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget request and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s priorities.
Senator Capito highlighted the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) facility in Clarksburg, West Virginia. She noted its critical role in processing background checks and fingerprints for firearm purchases. “I know on April 17th, you traveled to West Virginia to visit the CJIS facility… The employees out there really appreciated your visit,” she stated, asking about the resources needed for the facility.
Director Patel expressed his admiration for the work at CJIS. “My general impression aligns with yours. I was wildly impressed with the work that’s done out there,” he said. He mentioned that while they are nearing capacity, there is potential for expansion at the site. Patel emphasized improving data reporting from state and local authorities to enhance CJIS operations.
Senator Capito also addressed efforts against drug cartels, urging continued action against transnational criminal organizations. “I would encourage you to do everything – and you are – to prevent the drug smuggling,” she remarked.
