Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who chairs the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, led a hearing on the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Bill with input from various stakeholders. The hearing focused on how this bill could influence economic development and the importance of permitting reform for the efficient growth of the nation’s surface transportation network.
Chairman Capito questioned participants about how the reauthorization would impact economic and job growth. She inquired whether predictability, affordability, or flexibility were key factors in driving economic benefits. Governor Kelly Armstrong from North Dakota emphasized the need for predictability to reduce inefficient spending due to inconsistent funding increases over time.
Austin Ramirez, CEO of Husco International Inc., highlighted issues related to supply chains and infrastructure maintenance. He pointed out that unresolved litigation over projects like Wisconsin’s I-94 corridor leads to significant traffic delays for employees.
Regarding permitting reform, Chairman Capito noted its central role in ensuring efficiency in project execution and financial resource allocation. She mentioned ongoing discussions with Senator Whitehouse on this topic.
