The U.S. Senate has unanimously passed legislation to designate the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse as the “Irene M. Keeley United States Courthouse,” in honor of Judge Irene M. Keeley, the first woman appointed as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia.
Senator Shelley Moore Capito expressed her gratitude for the Senate’s support, stating, “I am thrilled the Senate unanimously passed our legislation to designate the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse in honor of Judge Keeley’s career and her decades of service to West Virginia.” She emphasized Judge Keeley’s integrity, understanding of the law, and fairness in handling cases.
Senator Joe Manchin also welcomed the Senate’s unanimous approval, highlighting Judge Keeley’s inspirational commitment to justice and integrity. He reiterated his dedication to working with Senator Capito and their colleagues to ensure the bill becomes law.
Judge Irene M. Keeley, who obtained her law degree from the West Virginia College of Law in 1980, was confirmed as a U.S. District Court Judge in 1992 and served as Chief Judge for the Northern District of West Virginia from 2001 to 2008.
The bipartisan effort to honor Judge Keeley began on January 11, 2024, when Senators Capito and Manchin introduced the legislation. The bill was unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on January 18, 2024, before being passed by the full Senate.
The legislation will now move to the House of Representatives for consideration. Once signed into law, the Clarksburg Federal Courthouse will bear the name of the esteemed Judge Irene M. Keeley, recognizing her groundbreaking career and dedication to the legal profession.
