WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) was honored to receive the Champion of Public Broadcasting Award during the America’s Public Television Stations (APTS) Public Media Summit in Washington, D.C. on February 28, 2024.

In her acceptance speech, Senator Capito expressed her gratitude, stating, “It’s an honor to receive the Champion of Public Broadcasting Award.” She highlighted the significant role of public broadcasting in communities and its contribution to keeping Americans informed about local, national, and global events, particularly in her state of West Virginia. Senator Capito emphasized her continuous support for public broadcasting operations and her efforts to ensure the reliability and availability of emergency communication services.

APTS President and CEO Patrick Butler commended Senator Capito, noting her longstanding support for public broadcasting. He stated, “Senator Capito has been a long-time friend of public broadcasting and has been a supporter of our work for over two decades.” Butler further highlighted Senator Capito’s understanding of the importance of public broadcasting services in education, public safety, and civic leadership, not only in West Virginia but across the nation. He emphasized the crucial role of federal appropriations in providing these services to the public free of charge, expressing gratitude for Senator Capito’s leadership and support.

In response to the recognition, Senator Capito expressed her pleasure in collaborating with public broadcasting personnel in West Virginia and her anticipation of future collaborations. The 2024 Champion of Public Broadcasting Award recognizes Senator Capito’s dedication and contributions to the field of public broadcasting, acknowledging her as a key advocate for the essential services provided by public television stations nationwide.
