At Ruffner Elementary, two students who had been struggling with frequent absences and academic challenges experienced a turnaround due to the support of a classroom aide and her husband, both employees of Kanawha County Schools. The aide noticed the students’ attendance issues and reached out to their family, initially offering rides to school. This outreach developed into regular check-ins, tutoring, and efforts to make school a welcoming environment.

“They are part of my family now,” said the aide.

The consistent support led to improved attendance and academic performance for both students. Over time, the relationship between the families deepened, with the aide and her husband including the girls in family activities such as outings, birthday celebrations, and holidays.

“They have my heart. They are wonderful girls who are growing each day,” added the aide.

The parents of the students welcomed this partnership, viewing it as supportive rather than judgmental. Together with the school staff, they focused on helping their daughters succeed academically and personally.

This account highlights how collaboration among educators, families, and students can lead to positive outcomes in Kanawha County Schools.
