Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) announced that the U.S. Department of Education will release funds to support 21st Century Community Learning Centers. As chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS), Capito played a significant role in advocating for this funding.
The announcement follows a letter led by Senator Capito and her Republican colleagues to Russell Vought, Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The letter urged the release of anticipated education formula funding, an issue brought to her attention by those directly affected.
Senator Capito emphasized the importance of these learning centers: “21st Century Community Learning Centers offer important services that many West Virginians rely on. This program supports states in providing quality after-school and summer learning programs for students while enabling their parents to work and contribute to local economies.”
Capito expressed satisfaction with OMB Director Vought’s decision: “I made this clear to OMB Director Vought and was glad he followed through on my request to release these critical funds. Doing so will help our students in West Virginia and across country thrive.”
