Governor Patrick Morrisey has called for all West Virginians to observe a statewide moment of silence or prayer at 2:15 p.m. today, in honor of Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe and Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, two members of the West Virginia National Guard who were ambushed while serving in Washington, D.C. Flags have been ordered to fly at half-staff following the death of Specialist Beckstrom last night.

“These two West Virginia heroes were serving our country and protecting our nation’s capital when they were maliciously attacked,” Governor Morrisey said. “Their courage and commitment to duty represent the very best of our state. I am asking every West Virginian to pause at 2:15 p.m. on Friday to pray for their families and their fellow service members.”

Earlier this year, President Donald J. Trump mobilized the District of Columbia National Guard in response to increased violent crime in Washington, D.C., instructing the Secretary of Defense to work with state governors for additional support from National Guard units as needed. Governor Morrisey responded by sending members of the West Virginia National Guard to active duty in the capital.

Staff Sergeant Wolfe, age 24 from Martinsburg, serves with the 167th Force Support Squadron. Specialist Beckstrom, age 20 from Summersville, was part of the 863rd Military Police Company. The attack took place on November 26 near Farragut West Metro Station during security operations shortly after 2:15 p.m.

Nearby National Guard members and law enforcement officers quickly intervened to stop the attacker and prevent further violence. Both Guardsmen were transported to a hospital; SSgt Wolfe remains in very critical condition.

“The people of West Virginia stand united in condemning this cowardly and evil act,” Governor Morrisey said. “We honor SSgt Wolfe for his courage, and we honor SPC Beckstrom for making the ultimate sacrifice in service to her state and nation. We hold their families, their friends, and their fellow Guardsmen in our deepest thoughts and prayers. This moment of silence, and lowering of the flags, is one small way to demonstrate our gratitude, our respect, and our support during this painful and heartbreaking time.”

Governor Morrisey also emphasized that both SSgt Wolfe and SPC Beckstrom volunteered for this mission as part of America’s armed forces tradition.

Their actions are described as reflecting qualities long associated with those who serve from West Virginia.
