Governor Patrick Morrisey recognized on May 4 Major Edwin Stanfield and Major Ryan Reynolds for their heroic actions during a November attack involving West Virginia National Guardsmen. The ceremony took place at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes, where Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and military leaders joined to honor the two service members.

The event highlighted the bravery shown by both majors in response to an ambush that targeted SSgt Andrew Wolfe and Spc Sarah Beckstrom. “When faced with a threat – the ambush of SSgt Andrew Wolfe and Spc Sarah Beckstrom – they did not hesitate,” said Governor Morrisey. “They moved toward the danger and acted decisively. In doing so, they defended not only Americans, but West Virginians, and saved countless lives.”

Major Stanfield received the Airman’s Medal while Major Reynolds was awarded the Soldier’s Medal, which are among the highest recognitions for acts of heroism outside combat situations. Both individuals risked their safety to protect others during the incident.

SSgt Wolfe sustained injuries in the attack, while Spc Beckstrom lost her life. Wolfe continues his recovery, and he as well as Beckstrom’s family were honored with Purple Hearts during President Trump’s State of the Union address earlier this year.

“This kind of heroism does not come out of nowhere,” said Governor Morrisey. “It is rooted in something deeper and developed over time through the values you hold, the people you meet along the way, and the communities you call home. I’d like to think West Virginia played a role in shaping the kind of courage we saw that day.”
