Governor Patrick Morrisey and First Lady Denise Morrisey are inviting residents of West Virginia to submit photographs of family members or loved ones who have served in the United States Military or as first responders. These photos will be displayed on the annual Honor Trees at the State Capitol during the Christmas season.
The tradition holds personal meaning for both Governor Morrisey and First Lady Morrisey. The First Lady’s father and brother both served in the military, with her brother having been an F-14 fighter pilot. Governor Morrisey’s father was a World War II veteran, and his mother worked as a nurse for the Veterans Administration.
This year, the Honor Trees will be placed outside the Governor’s Reception Room in the smaller rotunda at the Capitol. An additional tree, decorated by Gold Star mothers, will pay tribute to those who have lost their lives while serving.
“West Virginians have always understood the value of service,” said Governor Morrisey. “These photos provide us with the opportunity to honor the real heroes among us; our neighbors, our sons and daughters, our parents and friends. Each provides the courage and strength to lift our state every single day.”
First Lady Morrisey stated, “As the daughter of a veteran, this tradition is incredibly close to my heart. Every photograph represents a family’s story of sacrifice and love. It is an honor to celebrate these heroes and to share their legacy with all who visit the Capitol during the holidays.”
Residents wishing to participate must send photocopies—not original photographs—by December 1 so that they can be included in this year’s display. Submissions can be mailed to:
