Governor Patrick Morrisey joined West Virginia University officials, coaches, and student-athletes on April 10 to celebrate a year of achievements for Mountaineer athletics in Morgantown.

The event highlighted the successes of several WVU teams, marking a significant moment for the university and the state. Recognizing these accomplishments serves as an example of teamwork and dedication within collegiate sports.

“These teams represent what happens when you put in the work, stay disciplined, and come together as a team,” said Governor Morrisey. “They’ve made this university proud, they’ve made this state proud, and they’ve shown the entire country what West Virginia is capable of.”

Among those honored was the West Virginia University rifle team, which secured its 21st national championship under the leadership of Griffin Lake. Lake also earned individual honors as national champion and Most Outstanding Performer. The men’s basketball team won the College Basketball Crown championship in Las Vegas with Honor Huff being named tournament MVP after scoring 38 points in an overtime victory. The women’s basketball team captured a Big 12 Championship and hosted an NCAA Tournament game at home for the first time in over three decades.
