Governor Patrick Morrisey signed legislation on Mar. 31 that delivers a five percent personal income tax cut for every taxpayer in West Virginia. The new law, along with additional measures aligning the state’s tax code with federal provisions, is expected to provide more than $230 million in annual tax relief starting with the 2026 tax year.
The move comes as West Virginia reports significant economic momentum, highlighted by recent investment announcements totaling $14.3 billion statewide. State officials say these investments and the new tax policies are aimed at making West Virginia more competitive for residents and businesses alike.
“West Virginians sent us to tackle real problems and deliver real results,” Governor Morrisey said. “By securing this five percent income tax cut, we are returning money to the people who earned it and ensuring our state remains the most competitive place in the region to live, work, and raise a family.”
Morrisey also signed legislation that brings West Virginia’s tax code into line with permanent elements of the Trump Tax Cuts—referred to as the Working Families Tax Cut—which ensures that residents benefit from federal relief measures such as enhancements to child care credits and expanded incentives for research investments.
“This session, we made meaningful progress reducing taxes, strengthening our workforce, and advancing policies that position our state for long-term growth,” Morrisey said.
