Governor Patrick Morrisey traveled to Washington, D.C. to receive updates on two West Virginia National Guard members who were critically injured in a shooting near the White House on Wednesday. He met with the injured Guardsmen, their families, and other troops stationed in the area.
“I’m asking every West Virginian to pray for our two Guardsmen as their families, friends, and neighbors struggle with this unspeakable tragedy,” Governor Morrisey said. “These two Guardsmen voluntarily stepped up and risked everything for our state and nation – they are our protectors and some of the most courageous West Virginians you could possibly imagine.”
Morrisey was accompanied by West Virginia Adjutant General Jim Seward during his visits to the hospital where the Guardsmen remain in critical condition. The governor also spent time with supporters of the service members.
He continues to meet with West Virginia troops in Washington, D.C., and is regularly communicating with federal officials about the incident.
Federal authorities have stated that the alleged attacker is an Afghan national who entered the United States through a federal resettlement program.
“What we know so far is deeply disturbing. An Afghan national brought into this country under a federal program attacked West Virginia service members defending our nation’s capital,” Governor Morrisey said. “These facts demand a comprehensive investigation so we can bring those responsible to justice. We will continue working closely with federal authorities to get clear answers.”
Governor Morrisey also spoke with President Trump about ongoing support for the injured Guardsmen and their families.
