Kanawha County Schools announces results for 2026 Math Field Day competition

Kanawha County Schools held its 2026 Math Field Day over two days, bringing together students from elementary through high school to compete in mathematics. The event featured participants from across the district, who worked through a variety of math problems as they represented their schools.

On the first day, fourth and fifth graders competed. The top finishers for fourth grade were Leo Goffreda from Point Harmony Elementary, Vivaan Haricharan from Holz Elementary, and Tate Bock from Weberwood Elementary. Grayson Lodge from St. Francis was named alternate. For fifth grade, Will Emrick of Overbrook Elementary, Roger Lin of Central Elementary, and Ella Alhamwi of Sacred Heart took the top spots, with William Ghareeb of Cross Lanes Christian as alternate.

The second day saw students in grades six through twelve competing. In sixth grade, Evan Cumberledge (Cross Lanes Christian), Simon Hale (Horace Mann Middle School), and Ian Alhamwi (Charleston Catholic) placed highest; Juliana Fields (Dunbar Middle School) was alternate. Seventh-grade winners included Collin Gertz (DuPont Middle School), Charlie Davis (John Adams Middle School), and Reed Pell (Elkview Middle School), with Madison Leport (Charleston Catholic) as alternate.

Eighth-grade honors went to Hayden Zhang (Andrew Jackson Middle School), Eli Hale (Horace Mann Middle School), and Nadia Cicenas (Charleston Catholic). Harper Bartlett of Sissonville Middle School was alternate.

For ninth grade, Hope Wu, Shrija Malkaram, and Vibhuman Haricharan—all from George Washington High School—were top scorers. Beau Hale of Capital High School was named alternate.

The high school team consists of the ten students with the highest scores: Anshuman Haricharan (George Washington High School), Ellie Hoblitzell (Charleston Catholic), Colin Brown (Charleston Catholic), Andrew Vogelaar (Nitro High School), Luca DiCocco (Charleston Catholic), Isaac Franck (George Washington High School), Ben Smith (George Washington High School), Isaiah Vellaithambi (George Washington High School), Saja Huggi (George Washington High School), and Audree Born (Herbert Hoover High School).

Five alternates were also selected: Christopher Shickchen (Cross Lanes Christian) as first alternate; Jerry Stover (Riverside High School) second; Dakota Taylor (Capital High School) third; Christian Shambllin (Cross Lanes Christian) fourth; Vivian Zhang (Nitro High School) fifth.

Top overall scoring middle school teams were Horace Mann Middle School and Charleston Catholic High School.
