Kanawha County Schools has launched the KCS Student Leadership Team, a new initiative aimed at promoting student leadership and amplifying student voices across its middle and high schools. The group is made up of two representatives from each school in the district, providing a platform for students to share ideas and feedback.
High school co-presidents Blake Leavitt from Riverside High School and Miley Mullins from Nitro High School are leading the team’s activities this year. The team has outlined four primary goals: ensuring that every student’s voice is heard, creating safe and welcoming school communities, connecting students with necessary resources, and building school spirit by celebrating achievements.
The team plans to involve more students in planning activities that improve their school experience. They also aim to promote inclusion, prevent bullying, and ensure all students feel accepted, including those in self-contained ID and AU programs. Additionally, the group will work on raising awareness about available resources such as school supplies and hygiene products while supporting attendance initiatives.
The KCS Student Leadership Team acts as a link between students and district leadership to ensure that student perspectives contribute to decision-making processes. Recently introduced to the KCS Board of Education, this group marks an early milestone for student involvement in district affairs.
According to Kanawha County Schools, “This student-led effort reflects KCS’s commitment to listening to students, empowering young leaders, and building schools where every student feels valued.” The district anticipates that the impact of the Student Leadership Team will expand throughout the academic year.
