Kanawha County Schools students receive top honors at state science fair

Students from Kanawha County Schools earned top placements at the West Virginia State Science Fair, according to a Mar. 17 announcement from the district. The event saw participants from across the county recognized for their achievements in categories such as chemistry, engineering, biomedical science, and mathematics.

The recognition highlights the importance of fostering curiosity and critical thinking among students. These skills are central to preparing young people for future leadership roles and addressing real-world challenges.

Among this year’s honorees, Iqraa Zaman of George Washington High School received first place in Division III Translational Medical Sciences and qualified for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Zaman’s project focused on genetic survival mechanisms in glioblastoma. Other notable winners included Toleen Alkhawlani, Sanaa Farran, and Maryam Branion in Division I Chemistry; Nathaniel Dodd in Division II Mathematics and Data; Shrija Malkaram in Division III Biomedical and Health Sciences; Manvitha Sanjaya and Charvitha Sanjaya in Division III Cellular and Molecular Biology; Henry Davis and Ian Osborne in Division III Engineering Technology: Statics and Dynamics; and Hope Wu in Division III Mathematics.

The district said these accomplishments reflect not only student dedication but also support from teachers, families, and school communities. “We are proud of every student who represented Kanawha County Schools with excellence,” the statement read.

Kanawha County Schools promotes student achievements in art, music, forensic investigations, and community connections according to the official website.
