KCS students organize county-wide community service projects across Kanawha County

Students in Kanawha County Schools have organized a district-wide community service initiative, according to an April 22 announcement. The KCS Student Leadership Team is leading the effort, which brings together schools from across the county for various service projects including donation drives, volunteer work, campus cleanups, and community outreach.

The initiative highlights the role of students in making a positive impact on their communities. Projects are taking place at multiple schools and cover areas such as beautification efforts, volunteering at local organizations, supporting shelters through donation drives, and student-led activities connecting different grade levels.

Participating schools include Andrew Jackson Middle School with trash collection and campus cleanup; West Side Middle School focusing on safety improvements; Sissonville Middle School planting flowers; Hayes Middle School cleaning up St. Albans City Park; Nitro High School holding a cleanup competition; Cross Lanes Elementary working on beautification; and Riverside High School organizing a campus cleanup. Other activities involve Capital High School volunteering at Ronald McDonald House and KCHA Animal Shelter, George Washington High serving at Heart + Hand and CAMC Hospitality House, Horace Mann Middle providing food distribution support, Dunbar Middle visiting nursing homes with student-led activities, South Charleston High running a Ronald McDonald House donation drive, DuPont Middle organizing military care packages with feeder schools participating, Point Harmony Elementary collecting pet supplies for KCHA, Elkview Middle supporting the Humane Society with supply drives, and Andrew Jackson Middle conducting JA Cards and backpack drives.

Additional student-led initiatives span hygiene kit assembly supported by local businesses, school gardening partnerships at elementary levels, school-wide cross-grade projects promoting unity among students countywide, as well as recycling competitions such as that held by Nitro Elementary.

Kanawha County Schools promotes student achievements in art and music while fostering connections within the community according to the official website.
