Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, led a hearing in Washington, D.C. to consider two nominations for key environmental positions. Katherine Scarlett has been nominated to be a Member of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), while Jeffrey Hall is nominated for Assistant Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
In her opening statement, Chairman Capito expressed gratitude to both nominees and their families for attending. “At this hearing, we will consider the President’s nominations of Katherine Scarlett to serve as Chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality and Jeffrey Hall to serve as Assistant Administrator for the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance at the Environmental Protection Agency,” she stated.
Chairman Capito emphasized Katherine Scarlett’s qualifications, noting her role as CEQ’s chief of staff where she supported federal agencies’ efforts under recent legislation and court decisions. “Katherine is very well-qualified to lead CEQ,” said Capito. She highlighted Scarlett’s contributions during the Trump Administration and her work with EPW on significant legislative acts.
The hearing also addressed Jeffrey Hall’s nomination to lead EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. This office works with various governmental bodies to ensure compliance with environmental laws like the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act. “Mr. Hall’s professional experience gives him the expertise to effectively lead this office,” noted Capito.
Capito concluded by expressing her anticipation for Hall’s insights into managing enforcement and compliance priorities at EPA.
