The One Big Beautiful Bill is set to provide significant funding for law enforcement, focusing on training, equipment, and staffing. Senator Shelley Moore Capito highlighted the bill’s investment in supporting law enforcement officers in West Virginia and across the country.
“The brave men and women who put themselves in harm’s way in West Virginia and across the country deserve to have the resources they need to keep themselves and our communities safe. I am proud that the One Big Beautiful Bill invests in additional training and hiring efforts, equipment, resources to improve our prisons, and the U.S. Secret Service,” Senator Capito said.
Key provisions of the bill include $30 billion allocated for law enforcement training and equipment. The legislation also provides funding to hire more Immigration Enforcement personnel. Additional support is directed toward addressing staffing shortages and improving facilities within the Bureau of Prisons. The bill expands recruitment and training resources for the U.S. Secret Service.
Local law enforcement initiatives are set to benefit from increased funding through programs such as the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (Byrne JAG) and Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).
Community leaders expressed support for these measures. Huntington Mayor Patrick Farrell stated: “Public safety is job number one for every Mayor, but no city can do it alone. That’s why the One Big Beautiful Bill’s investment in training, equipment, and local policing is so important for Huntington. Senator Capito knows no city can do it alone, and she’s been the federal partner we need every step of the way to support our officers who keep Huntington safe.”
Rodney Miller, Executive Director of the WV Sheriff’s Association, noted: “West Virginia has seen the direct impact of federal funding for important training programs to develop our next police leaders. This continued support of law enforcement will make a positive impact on capabilities for our sheriffs, deputies, police, troopers and others to keep our communities safe.”
Greenbrier County Commissioner Tammy Tincher added: “The continued financial support included in the One Big Beautiful Bill for the Byrne JAG and COPS grants will allow opportunities for our local law enforcement agencies in West Virginia to continue protecting our communities.”
