Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito led a hearing focused on the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Bill, emphasizing stakeholder perspectives. The hearing aimed to explore the bill’s role in economic development and the importance of permitting reform for enhancing the country’s surface transportation network.
Chairman Capito addressed stakeholders about the significance of reauthorizing surface transportation for economic growth. She asked about factors such as predictability, affordability, and flexibility in relation to economic and job growth. Governor Kelly Armstrong highlighted inefficiencies due to inconsistent funding increases over decades. He noted that greater predictability could reduce spending on projects.
Austin Ramirez from Husco International Inc. emphasized supply chain issues affecting rural facilities and highlighted traffic congestion problems caused by litigation delays on key corridors like I-94 near Milwaukee.
Chairman Capito also discussed permitting reform with Senator Whitehouse, underscoring its critical role in ensuring efficient use of funds for transportation projects.
