Senator Jim Justice Shares Updates on Community Engagement and Support for Female Athletes
Senator Jim Justice, governor of West Virginia and former girls’ basketball coach, shared a series of updates between February 2 and February 4, 2026, highlighting community involvement and his ongoing support for female athletes.
On February 2, Senator Justice recounted a recent encounter involving a former basketball player and her son. In his post, he stated, “A former basketball player of mine had a pretty special request. Her son is working on a social studies project about @BabydogJustice, and, of course, the kids had to meet her for their research. Now they’ve got all the Babydog knowledge they need to ace their project!”.
The following day, on February 3, Senator Justice commented on local weather predictions tied to Groundhog Day traditions. He wrote, “Punxsutawney Phil and West Virginia’s own French Creek Freddie are calling for six more weeks of winter. My prediction? More ENERGY from West Virginia’s world-class coal!”.
On February 4, Senator Justice recognized National Girls and Women in Sports Day by reflecting on his experience as a coach and advocating for safe environments for female athletes. He posted, “National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Coaching girls’ basketball for decades has given me the opportunity to witness generations of female athletes give their all to the game. Today and every day, female athletes deserve safe and protected spaces to play and compete.”
Jim Justice has served as the governor of West Virginia since 2017 after previously gaining recognition as a businessman in agriculture and coal industries. His public appearances often highlight both state traditions—such as referencing French Creek Freddie during Groundhog Day—and local figures like Babydog Justice.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day is observed annually across the United States to honor achievements by female athletes while promoting gender equity in sports participation.
