U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from West Virginia, recently used her social media platform to comment on several political issues, including a Department of Homeland Security shutdown, voting rights, and protections for female athletes.
On March 20, 2026, Capito criticized Democratic lawmakers in a post: “This @DHSgov shutdown is a product of Democrats nonsensical thinking, which is wasting tax payer dollars every day.”
The following day, she addressed election integrity with another statement: “American elections should be for American citizens.” This post was made on March 21, 2026.
Later that same day, Capito highlighted her support for legislation related to women’s sports: “Standing up for our female athletes should be a given. It shouldn’t be a Republican or Democrat issue. It’s common sense.
I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. Last year, every one of my Democrat colleagues opposed the bill”.
Senator Capito has dedicated her career to public service for West Virginia and serves on several Senate committees focused on appropriations, commerce, science and transportation, as well as environment and public works (official website). She has prioritized infrastructure investment and broadband expansion during her tenure. A seventh-generation West Virginian who grew up in Glen Dale, Capito holds degrees from Duke University and the University of Virginia (official website). She lives with her husband Charles and their family (official website).
