Senator Shelley Moore Capito, representing West Virginia, addressed the ongoing government shutdown in a series of posts on October 2, 2025. Capito’s statements criticized Senate Democrats and called for bipartisan cooperation to resolve the impasse.
In her first post at 19:11 UTC, Capito wrote, “The #SchumerShutdown does nothing to help move the needle on larger issues that Democrats want to tackle.”
Later that evening at 19:31 UTC, she continued her criticism by stating, “Bottom line: We didn’t have to be, and shouldn’t be, in a government shutdown. We have a path forward, but it requires Senate Democrats to come to their senses and vote for the clean, short-term continuing resolution that would re-open the government. #SchumerShutdown”
At 21:00 UTC on the same day, Capito reiterated Republican efforts to end the shutdown: “.@SenateGOP is not giving up. As @LeaderJohnThune has said we’ll continue bringing forward opportunities for Senate Democrats to join us in reopening the government. We will keep voting to do the right thing and give them the chance to do the same.”
Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills or continuing resolutions needed to fund federal agencies. These events can lead to disruptions in federal services and furloughs for government employees.
Shelley Moore Capito has served as U.S. Senator from West Virginia since 2015 and is a member of the Republican Party.
