Senator Shelley Moore Capito, representing West Virginia, has used her social media platform to comment on the ongoing government funding impasse, referred to as the “#SchumerShutdown.” In a series of posts published between October 1 and October 2, 2025, Capito expressed concern over the effects of the shutdown and criticized the current appropriations process.
On October 1, Capito highlighted her recent media appearance by posting: ” In case you missed it → Joined @ABCNewsLive yesterday to talk with @LinseyDavis about the #SchumerShutdown. WATCH HERE: https://t.co/UscGhMRtir”.
The following day, she addressed the broader impact of the budget standoff in another post: “The prosperity of the American people is being held hostage. The appropriations process has been hijacked. All because of the #SchumerShutdown. https://t.co/vWk7MBEMKQ” (October 2).
A third post on October 2 included only a link: “https://t.co/VPnrqsPMnN”.
The term “#SchumerShutdown” refers to partisan disputes in Congress that have led to lapses in federal government funding. Such shutdowns occur when lawmakers fail to pass necessary appropriations bills or continuing resolutions before fiscal deadlines. During these periods, many federal agencies suspend non-essential operations and furlough employees until funding is restored.
Shelley Moore Capito serves as a U.S. Senator from West Virginia and is an active member of several Senate committees focused on issues such as appropriations and infrastructure.
