Senator Shelley Moore Capito has used her social media platform to express concerns about the ongoing government shutdown, which she attributes to Democratic obstruction. In a series of posts made on November 7 and 8, 2025, Capito highlights the impact of the shutdown on both the nation and her home state of West Virginia.

On November 7, Capito wrote, “This #SchumerShutdown is wearing on the American public and on West Virginia in particular. This historic obstruction by Democrats has to end.” Later that day, she addressed disruptions faced by travelers: “Air travelers are being hit hard by the delays, cancellations, and chaos at the airports. All because of the Democrats’ #SchumerShutdown.”

Continuing her criticism into November 8, Capito described further consequences for families and vulnerable populations: “It’s day 39 of the #SchumerShutdown and what is there to show for it… Nothing except for a lot of pain. Families anxious about their next paycheck. SNAP recipients are unsure if they’ll be able to put food on the table. Americans don’t deserve this. And the Democrats come”.

Government shutdowns have historically led to disruptions in federal services and uncertainty for government employees as well as recipients of federal assistance programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). During previous shutdowns, air travel has also been affected due to staffing shortages among Transportation Security Administration agents and air traffic controllers.
