Senator Shelley Moore Capito, representing West Virginia, has recently used her social media platform to address ongoing government funding debates and the resulting shutdown. In a series of posts between September 30 and October 1, 2025, Capito outlined her position on the matter and criticized Senate Democrats for their role in the impasse.
On September 30, Capito wrote, “Tonight, I proudly cast my vote again to do right by West Virginians—to keep the government open and ensure the critical services that many rely on can continue to operate. Sadly, Senate Democrats chose to play politics. FULL STATEMENT https://t.co/MUj2YbpVVa”.
The following day, she posted an announcement about her upcoming remarks on the Senate floor: “Speaking shortly on the Senate floor about the #SchumerShutdown. TUNE IN HERE: https://t.co/IfgCRvMyZx” (October 1).
Later that same day, Capito reaffirmed her party’s stance by stating, “.@SenateGOP and @HouseGOP will not give up. The American people deserve better than the #SchumerShutdown. Let’s open the government and return to regular order. https://t.co/OJbrwaOsHE” (October 1).
Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass legislation funding federal agencies before an existing appropriations deadline. Such events have previously resulted in suspended services and furloughed workers until agreements are reached.
Senator Capito is a Republican serving as U.S. Senator for West Virginia since 2015.
