Senator Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican representing West Virginia, addressed the ongoing government funding dispute in a series of social media posts on September 30, 2025.
In her first post of the day, Capito criticized Democratic lawmakers over stalled negotiations regarding government funding. She wrote, “Democrat obstruction is going to be detrimental to the American people. #SchumerShutdown https://t.co/8ZL9n1gV0z” (September 30, 2025).
Later that evening, Capito shared a personal message celebrating her daughter’s birthday: “The big ! Happy birthday to our daughter, Shelley! https://t.co/qrqKF5En4Z” (September 30, 2025).
Capito also announced an upcoming appearance on national television to discuss the government shutdown debate. She posted: ” Joining @ABCNewsLive soon to talk with @LinseyDavis about the #SchumerShutdown.
Watch live: https://t.co/yER5YIJCU2https://t.co/VHfrT282Yx” (September 30, 2025).
The term “#SchumerShutdown,” used by Capito in two of her posts, refers to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and has been employed by some Republicans to blame Democrats for lapses in government funding during periods of budget impasse. Government shutdowns can occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills or continuing resolutions necessary for federal agencies to operate.
These comments come amid heightened tensions in Congress as lawmakers face deadlines for passing spending legislation and averting a partial shutdown of federal operations.
