Senator Shelley Moore Capito posted a series of tweets on September 18 and 19, 2025, addressing both a Congressional event and ongoing government funding negotiations. Capito, who represents West Virginia in the U.S. Senate, commented on bipartisan activities as well as the possibility of a government shutdown.
On September 18, Capito highlighted a social event involving members of Congress: “A great night for the first-ever Congressional Pickleball Match on @TheNationalMall! Loved playing with my colleagues and seeing friends!”
The following day, her focus shifted to legislative matters. At 16:35 UTC on September 19, she wrote: “If Democrats don’t come to the table, this will be a #SchumerShutdown through and through.” Minutes later, she added: “A government shutdown would be the sole responsibility of Chuck Schumer, who has already said he will shut the government down if his demands for unrelated measures aren’t injected into the spending package.”
Capito’s comments come amid heightened tensions in Congress over federal spending bills. In recent years, disputes between parties have led to several short-term funding lapses and threats of shutdowns. Senator Chuck Schumer serves as Senate Majority Leader and has been at the center of budget negotiations in previous sessions.
Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations legislation funding federal agencies. Such events can result in furloughs for federal workers and interruptions to public services.
