Senator Shelley Moore Capito has used her social media platform to criticize Senate Democrats regarding the ongoing government funding negotiations. In a series of posts on October 3, 2025, Capito accused her Democratic colleagues of stalling the process and highlighted her own actions in response to the impasse.
In her first post, Capito wrote, “Senate Democrats are holding the government funding process hostage in their #SchumerShutdown.
Their demands would add more than $1 TRILLION in unrelated far-left priorities like:
Handing out COVID bonus payments
Giving free healthcare to illegal aliens
Sending tax” (October 3, 2025).
Later that day, she questioned changes in Democratic voting patterns on similar funding measures. Capito stated, “Did you know → Senate Democrats voted for 13 clean short-term funding bills under Biden and Schumer identical to this one that @LeaderJohnThune and @SenateGOP have put forward.
What’s changed?” (October 3, 2025).
Capito also announced a personal measure she had taken during the shutdown. She posted, “Until Senate Democrats come to their senses and help end this #SchumerShutdown, I’ve asked the Financial Clerk of the Senate to withhold my salary.” (October 3, 2025).
The comments from Senator Capito reflect a broader debate over federal spending priorities and short-term funding bills. Government shutdowns have historically resulted from disagreements between parties about budget allocations or policy riders attached to appropriations legislation. Lawmakers sometimes choose to withhold their salaries during such shutdowns as a gesture of solidarity with furloughed federal workers or as a protest against legislative gridlock.
