Senator Shelley Moore Capito, representing West Virginia, used her social media platform on November 8 and 9, 2025, to criticize Senate Democrats regarding ongoing legislative negotiations and the effects of a government shutdown.

On November 8, Capito questioned the approach of Senate Democrats to healthcare reform. She posted, “We’ve been doing this for 39 days and this “plan” is what Senate Democrats bring to the table? Billions more in spending that does NOTHING to lower the cost of healthcare.”

Later that day, she addressed the impact of what she called the “#SchumerShutdown,” referencing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Capito wrote on November 8: “Because of this Senseless #SchumerShutdown, real people are paying the price. Thousands of West Virginia families rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table. Those benefits are at risk because Washington Democrats refuse to act. Federal employees, park rangers, mine safety”.

The following day, Capito commented on travel disruptions affecting families during the holiday season. On November 9 she stated: “Families trying to fly home for the holidays are seeing longer lines, canceled flights, and growing frustration. All of this chaos and uncertainty is completely avoidable. 40 days is shameful. This #SchumerShutdown was avoidable.”

Government shutdowns have historically led to interruptions in federal services and programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), which provides food assistance to low-income families. Past shutdowns have also affected federal employees’ paychecks and disrupted operations at national parks and other public services.

Senator Capito has previously advocated for measures aimed at reducing government spending while maintaining essential services for her constituents in West Virginia.
