Senator Shelley Moore Capito, representing West Virginia, has used her social media platform to address the ongoing government shutdown, which she refers to as the “#SchumerShutdown.” In a series of posts on November 5 and 6, 2025, Capito criticized Senate Democrats for what she describes as widespread negative impacts resulting from the impasse.
On November 5, Capito wrote: “The #SchumerShutdown has resulted in delayed flights, airport chaos, SNAP benefits being jeopardized, and so much more. End this now, Senate Democrats.”
Continuing her criticism the following day, Capito stated: “Flight delays and airport chaos → direct results of the #SchumerShutdown.” This post echoed concerns about disruptions in air travel that have been widely reported during previous federal government shutdowns.
Later on November 6, Capito urged followers to listen to another Republican leader’s perspective: “Listen to @LeaderJohnThune as he details the results of the #SchumerShutdown. Air traffic, small businesses, food banks, federal workers have all been negatively impacted. Enough is enough.”
Government shutdowns often result from legislative deadlock over budget appropriations or policy disagreements. During such periods in recent history—including those in 2013 and 2018—federal agencies have partially closed or reduced operations. This typically leads to delays at airports due to furloughed air traffic controllers and TSA agents; interruptions in federal assistance programs like SNAP; and broader economic effects impacting small businesses and nonprofits that rely on federal funding or services.
Senator Capito’s comments reflect ongoing partisan debate over responsibility for government funding lapses. The use of hashtags such as “#SchumerShutdown” is part of a broader rhetorical strategy employed by both parties during similar events.
