Senator Shelley Moore Capito, representing West Virginia, has criticized Senate Democrats over the ongoing government shutdown, according to a series of posts on her social media account in mid-October 2025.
On October 15, Capito stated, “Senate Democrats have now rejected 8 TIMES a clean bill with bipartisan support that reopens the government. Instead of working to ease the pain Americans are feeling, Democrats are more focused on political games, just as we have said since day one. #SchumerShutdown”.
The following day, Capito provided an update on continued legislative efforts: “We just voted for TENTH time to reopen the government. This was yet another opportunity for 5 more Senate Democrats to join @SenateGOP in putting the American people first. Again, they chose politics.” This message reiterated her position that Democratic lawmakers were prioritizing political strategy over resolving the shutdown.
Later on October 16, Capito addressed the issue of defense funding during the shutdown, writing, “In the minds of Senate Democrats, voting for the Defense appropriations bill that PAYS OUR TROOPS ‘relinquishes some of the party’s leverage over shutdown negotiations.’ Really? Their continued political games are going to deeply hurt our brave men and women in uniform.”
These statements reflect ongoing partisan disagreement in Congress regarding efforts to end the federal government shutdown, which has led to multiple failed votes on reopening measures. Capito’s remarks underscore broader concerns about the impact of political stalemate on federal workers and military personnel.
