Senator Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican representing West Virginia, has recently posted several statements on her official X (formerly Twitter) account regarding ongoing developments in the U.S. Senate and community events.
On October 16, 2025, Capito criticized Senate Democrats for their handling of government funding negotiations, stating: “Americans across the country are forced to bear the brunt of the Senate Democrats catering to their progressive base and keeping this #SchumerShutdown going.”
The following day, October 17, 2025, she continued her criticism after another failed vote on a short-term funding extension. Capito wrote: “Yesterday for the TENTH TIME, Senate Democrats voted against the clean short-term funding extension. While they think ‘every day gets better’ for them, everyday Americans suffer the real consequences. #SchumerShutdown”
Also on October 17, Capito shifted focus to local events in West Virginia by promoting Bridge Day at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. She posted: “TOMORROW IS THE DAY! I hope everyone has a safe and fun #BridgeDay2025! This is a great day to get out and enjoy the @NewRiverNPS.”
The recent comments from Senator Capito come amid a broader debate over government funding in Congress. Government shutdowns have historically resulted from legislative impasses over federal spending bills or policy disagreements between parties. In this instance, repeated votes on short-term funding extensions have failed to resolve differences between Senate Republicans and Democrats.
Bridge Day is an annual event held at the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia that draws thousands of visitors each year for festivities and outdoor activities.
