Senator Shelley Moore Capito, the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from West Virginia, shared updates on her recent activities and positions in a series of posts on May 15, 2026.
In a tweet posted at 18:56 UTC, Capito wrote about her meeting with Japanese official Hideaki Ohmura: “It was a pleasure to meet with the Governor of the Aichi Prefecture in Japan, Hideaki Ohmura, yesterday. Great to discuss our growing relationship with Japan and their investment in West Virginia’s economic development and manufacturing.”
Later that day at 19:34 UTC, she expressed support for Vice President Vance’s initiatives: “I applaud @VP Vance for his efforts in eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse. It is so important that government resources go to those who truly need and deserve it.”
At 20:15 UTC, Capito commented on congressional pay during government shutdowns: “It makes sense that if agencies are shut down and federal employees are not being paid, then the same should go for Members of Congress. Glad the Senate made this practice mandatory.
Regardless, our goal should always be to keep our government open. Shutdowns are unacceptable”
Shelley Moore Capito has dedicated her career to public service for West Virginia and became the state’s first female U.S. Senator. She holds degrees from Duke University and the University of Virginia and is a seventh-generation West Virginian who grew up in Glen Dale. Capito is married with three children and several grandchildren (official website).
