U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito marked the Easter holiday and reflected on recent tragedies affecting West Virginia’s mining community in a series of posts published April 5 and 6, 2026.

On April 5, Capito wrote about the significance of Easter: “Easter has always been one of my favorite times of the year because it fills our hearts with a deeper sense of love and gratitude for the Lord. I hope that everyone is able to spend this special time with family and friends, giving thanks for the many blessings we share.”

Later that day, she addressed the anniversary of a mining disaster: “Today, we remember the 29 brave miners who lost their lives at Upper Big Branch. For many West Virginians, especially those who lost loved ones and friends, the memories from that terrible day are still so fresh in our minds. I will continue my efforts to protect our coal” (April 5, 2026).

On April 6, Capito expressed condolences after learning about another mining fatality: “Saddened to learn of the passing of West Virginia miner, Darin Reece, who lost his life in a mining incident in Marshall County. Miners like Darin take on difficult work to keep our communities running. Please join me in keeping his family, friends, and fellow miners in your”.

Capito’s remarks reflect her ongoing focus on issues important to West Virginians—especially those related to coal mining safety and remembrance. She has long dedicated her career to public service for West Virginia (official website). Capito serves on several Senate committees including Appropriations; Commerce, Science, and Transportation; and Environment and Public Works. Her legislative priorities include infrastructure investment, energy development such as coal mining safety measures, broadband expansion, and broader community support.

A seventh-generation West Virginian who grew up in Glen Dale (official website), Capito became the first woman elected to represent West Virginia in the U.S. Senate (official website). She holds degrees from Duke University and the University of Virginia (official website) and is recognized for her advocacy on behalf of her home state.
