Women's Volleyball's Historic Season Ends in Atlantic Region Semifinal with Loss to Top Seeded Gannon

UC Women's Volleyball ended their historic season in the semifinal match of the Atlantic Region Tournament on Saturday night. They fell behind early to top seeded Gannon University, battled back to take a 2-1 lead, before dropping the final two sets 25-15 and 15-9.    Set One: UC- 19 GU-25  

After taking an early lead from Gannon, UC conceded six consecutive points to bring the score to 6-2. Both teams clearly were feeling the effects of the crowd as set one played tight by both sides. Charleston committed 11 errors in the first set to Gannon's three, which proved to be the difference in the first set. Gannon outhit Charleston .209 to .000 in the set, with the bright spot for UC being Pia Selke who hit .250.  

 Set Two: UC-25  GU-23  

Gannon would use their first set momentum to jump out to an early lead before UC knotted the score at eight after a big kill by McKenzie Damon. Both teams traded points prior to a 4-0 run that gave UC a 15-11 lead in the middle of the set. UC finished the set winning four of the final 6 points with the final kill coming from McKenzie Carpenter. The Golden Eagles hit .238 during the set with 15 kills and was led by Sage Bearnson with five.    Set Three: UC-25 GU-22

Reagan McClean opened the third with two big kills to begin a back and forth set. Overall, there were 11 tie scores and three lead changes. Late in the set Charleston found themselves down 18-19 before ripping off four straight points, three of them coming from Pia Selke, and taking a 22-19 lead. They took control of the match by taking a 2-1 lead, winning three of the next five points, needing to win one more set to move to the championship.  

Set Four: UC-16 GU-25

UC struggled in the fourth falling 25-16 and collecting just 11 kills in the set and hitting .195. Gannon converted on 68% of their sideout opportunities to UC's 40%. Bearnson hit .364 during the set with four kills.  

Set Five: UC-9 GU-15

In set five UC came out firing, going up 4-2 before giving up three straight points and falling behind 5-4. After tying it up 5-5, Gannon picked up two quick kills and would head into the side switch up 8-6. UC would come as close to one before dropping three straight points and falling behind 11-7. Gannon took control with the crowd behind them and finished the set on a 4-1 run.
