Marshall's Emily McLatchey earned a second-place finish at the River Landing Classic, which finished up at River Landing Golf Course in Wallace, North Carolina on Tuesday.
On a tough day in the elements, McLatchey continued to excel, firing a 73 that left her 1-over for the tournament and secured her No. 2 spot one stroke behind winner Yanjun Lin of Princeton.
For the two-day event, McLatchey was the only player in the field to card three consecutive rounds at 1-over par or better, showing a consistency that kept her in contention throughout.
"Today was such a challenge with the weather and wind," Marshall women's golf coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "Emily's round was extremely impressive. I'm proud of her and the heart she showed today."
McLatchey showed her mental toughness in the final round on Tuesday, battling back from a difficult stretch early in the round that saw her drop a shot on three of four holes.
The sophomore from Winter Park, Florida, settled in well, notching 11 straight pars in the elements to find a groove before attacking with birdies at Hole Nos. 5 and 6 to put pressure on the competition.
Even though McLatchey fell just short, Burkhammer said the top-2 result in a strong field of competitors showed how special McLatchey can be on the course.
"It was fun to have a front row seat to see her showcase her skills," Burkhammer said.
As a team, Marshall finished the event in ninth place. UNC-Wilmington, who hosted the event, emerged as the champion by three strokes over James Madison.
Marshall's women's golf team returns to action on March 27 when they travel to the Golfweek AGT Collegiate at Pawley's Island in South Carolina.
