U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia has recently announced significant funding allocations for various initiatives in the state, covering a wide range of areas including environmental protection, economic development, public safety, and research programs.
Senator Capito, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, highlighted the importance of two grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WV DEP). She emphasized the significance of these funds in enhancing water pollution control and leak prevention in underground storage tanks, stating, "It’s critical we protect water resources across our state and boost efforts aimed at leak protection and prevention in underground storage tanks."
In addition to EPA funding, Senator Capito also announced grant and loan funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for rural development projects in West Virginia. The senator expressed her satisfaction with the resources allocated for water system upgrades, emphasizing the importance of investments that lead to safer and more reliable services in rural communities.
Furthermore, Senator Capito revealed grants from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Parks Service (NPS) to support rehabilitation and preservation efforts at the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. She encouraged individuals to visit the park and witness its natural beauty firsthand, stating, "I was proud to work with the NPS to secure resources that will advance our goal of making the New River Gorge a place for visitors from across West Virginia, and the country, a destination for generations to come."
Moreover, the senator announced a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to Bluefield, W.Va. to support youth success and crime prevention efforts. Senator Capito highlighted the impact of these resources in making the community safer and providing more paths to success for young people, stating, "This grant will equip Bluefield with resources that will help make the community safer and set our younger population on a path to reach their full potential."
Additionally, Senator Capito announced funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) to create a comprehensive economic development framework in Brooke County, W.Va. She emphasized the importance of providing communities with the resources they need to grow local economies and maximize their potential for success.
Lastly, the senator announced grants to West Virginia University (WVU) from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). Senator Capito praised WVU for its critical research contributions and expressed her pride in seeing resources from the EPSCoR program support research projects that expand knowledge and technological advancements.
