CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia has been approved as the second state in the nation to receive funding under the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, with Senator Shelley Moore Capito expressing her enthusiasm for the milestone. Senator Capito, who played a crucial role in securing the $1,210,800,969.85 funding through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), commended the state's progress, stating, "I am thrilled that West Virginia is the second state in the nation to have our BEAD plan approved by the Department of Commerce."

Acknowledging the dedication of Governor Justice's team, Senator Capito added, "It’s no surprise to me that West Virginia came out ahead of so many other states that have more personnel because it’s hard to compete with the dedication of Governor Justice’s team. I thank them for their tireless work on their plans to make sure these funds are able to be used properly and efficiently." She emphasized the importance of the funding in enhancing connectivity for homes, businesses, and classrooms across the state, while recognizing that there is still work to be done in ensuring more West Virginians are connected.

The BEAD program, established through the IIJA, aims to expand high-speed internet access by supporting planning, infrastructure deployment, and adoption programs. Senator Capito's efforts in advocating for accurate broadband mapping data have been instrumental in directing funding to areas in need. West Virginia's improved data revealed over 271,000 serviceable locations without broadband access, highlighting the significance of initiatives like the BEAD program in bridging the digital divide.

As West Virginia prepares to deploy the BEAD funding to advance connectivity initiatives, Senator Capito reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the state throughout the multi-year process. The approval of the state's BEAD plan marks a significant step towards achieving comprehensive internet access for all West Virginians.
