U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and 18 of her Senate Republican colleagues have introduced a resolution condemning the surge of antisemitism on U.S. college campuses. The resolution calls out university presidents who have enabled and failed to address this antisemitism, emphasizing the need for action to protect Jewish students. Senator Capito expressed her firm stance, stating, “Antisemitism anywhere, especially on college campuses, is absolutely unacceptable. Jewish students should not fear for their safety at school and the antisemitic hate displayed on these campuses cannot continue.”
The effort to combat campus antisemitism was spearheaded by U.S. Senator Tim Scott. The resolution also urges the U.S. Department of Education to ensure colleges and universities comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to safeguard Jewish students.
Senator Capito has been actively involved in initiatives to address antisemitism. She recently spoke about the issue at a Senate Republican leadership press conference and pressed U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona on the rise of antisemitism during a hearing. Additionally, she joined the Countering Anti-Semitism Act and co-sponsored the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, highlighting her continuous efforts to combat anti-Jewish bigotry on college campuses.
The resolution introduced by Senator Capito and her colleagues underscores the importance of standing against antisemitism and holding accountable those who perpetuate hate. It reflects a collective commitment to ensuring that Jewish students can pursue their education without facing discrimination or fear.
