U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) journeyed to Bethany, West Virginia today, where she gave the commencement address at the Bethany College Spring 2024 graduation ceremony. Alongside her role as keynote speaker, Senator Capito was also bestowed with an Honorary Doctorate of Education by Bethany College's President, Dr. Jamie Caridi. Founded in 1840, Bethany College holds the distinction of being the oldest institution of higher education in West Virginia.
Reflecting on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the graduates' educational journey, Senator Capito said, “For many of Bethany’s graduates, the COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed their graduation from high school four years ago, and I’m thrilled they were able to take part in today’s ceremony – in person – with their loved ones. My message today challenged graduates to grow on the foundation they have built here at Bethany and to face the obstacles of tomorrow with resilience and optimism. It was an honor to address the graduates and receive an honorary degree from such a historic institution in our state.”
Dr. Caridi expressed his gratitude for Senator Capito's participation: “We were honored to have Senator Shelley Moore Capito as our commencement speaker for 2024. Her commitment to fostering positive change aligns perfectly with the values we instill in our graduates at Bethany College. Sen. Capito’s address was an inspiring and memorable moment for our graduating class.”
