U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) issued a video statement today ahead of Memorial Day, which falls on Monday, May 27.
In her message, Senator Capito emphasized the importance of Memorial Day as more than just a start to summer or a day off from work. "It is a solemn time to reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice men and women in uniform have made for our freedoms," she stated.
Senator Capito highlighted West Virginia's long history of military service and acknowledged the many individuals from the state who have answered the call of duty. "West Virginia has a proud history of military service, but there are many West Virginians, and Americans, who made the ultimate sacrifice," she noted.
She also reflected on the significance of living in what she described as "the greatest nation in the world" and stressed that freedoms are integral to American identity.
"Every day, and especially on this Memorial Day, I encourage my fellow West Virginians to take a moment to remember the fallen soldiers and their full measure of devotion, and remember that freedoms do not come free," said Senator Capito. She concluded with an expression of gratitude: "And we are forever grateful for their service, and we will never forget their sacrifice."
