U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin, along with U.S. Representatives Carol Miller and Alex Mooney, have announced the approval of a Major Disaster Declaration for West Virginia by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This decision follows the damage caused by Post-Tropical Storm Helene in southern West Virginia from September 25 to September 28, 2024.

In November, the West Virginia Delegation had appealed to President Biden and FEMA for this declaration. Senator Capito remarked on her visit with Vice President-elect Vance to assess the damage in Mercer and Raleigh County. "Americans, and West Virginians especially, show up to help one another after a disaster," she stated. She expressed satisfaction that FEMA approved the request for Mercer County after her advocacy.

Senator Manchin emphasized the importance of federal support for recovery efforts: “I am proud that the members of the West Virginia Delegation were able to work together and push for this declaration.” He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring resources reach affected communities.

Congresswoman Miller expressed gratitude for FEMA's response: “Many communities in southern West Virginia were left with nothing but destruction and devastation after the storm.” She remains hopeful about recovery through federal aid.

Congressman Mooney highlighted his collaboration with fellow delegation members: “This declaration will open up the federal resources that our communities need to rebuild and recover.”

The declaration activates funding under FEMA’s Individual Assistance program, aiding individuals whose needs are unmet by insurance or other assistance forms. Eligible expenses include rental assistance, home repair or replacement, lodging, among others.

Residents of Mercer County can apply for assistance online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362.
