U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, recently engaged in a hearing regarding the nomination of Lee Zeldin as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The session focused on Zeldin's priorities and vision for leading the agency.

Senator Capito questioned Zeldin about his approach to energy reliability, addressing PFAS contaminants, and refocusing the EPA on its core missions of protecting communities from air, water, and chemical pollution. She also inquired about his plans concerning permitting reform and carbon capture projects.

"Our nation's electric reliability experts...have indicated that over half of the United States could face potential electrical shortages and blackouts in the next decade," Capito stated. She emphasized the need for considering electric reliability alongside statutory obligations. In response, Zeldin assured that he would "absolutely" take these factors into account.

Capito further asked about Zeldin's vision for fulfilling the EPA’s mission: "What is your vision for fulfilling the EPA’s statutory mission...?" Zeldin responded by highlighting the importance of accountability and transparency under existing laws such as the Clean Air Act.

Addressing PFAS contaminants was another key topic. "I understand that your New York district has actually experienced...PFAS pollution," Capito noted. Zeldin expressed his commitment to prioritize leadership in dealing with these issues nationwide.

The discussion also covered permitting reform, with Capito stating: "We need to make it easier to build in America." Zeldin agreed on collaboration among agencies and Congress to streamline processes: "That last part of your question is key..."

The hearing provided insight into how Zeldin might steer the EPA if confirmed.
