U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, along with other lawmakers, has signed a letter urging President Donald Trump to reinstate and expand pro-life policies as he begins his new administration. The letter was led by Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith and James Lankford, along with Representatives Chris Smith and Robert Aderholt.
The letter criticizes the Biden-Harris administration for what it describes as actions against unborn children and pro-life Americans. "Over the last four years, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and their administration systematically weaponized the government against the unborn, their mothers and pro-life Americans—doing their very best to erase every trace of life-affirming victories from your first administration," the lawmakers wrote.
The signatories express hope that Trump's policies will return in his second term. They emphasize a need for government support for pregnant women and parenting families. "We are grateful that the Trump administration can bring an end to the weaponization of the United States government against pro-life Americans and unborn children," they continued.
In total, 36 Senators and 108 Representatives signed the letter. It also condemns what it calls unprecedented pro-abortion policies under Biden-Harris. The letter is endorsed by several organizations including the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs, Family Research Council, and March for Life Action.
The full text of the letter includes criticisms of taxpayer funding for abortion services under Biden's leadership. It calls for adherence to amendments like Hyde and Weldon which restrict federal funding for abortions.
"We believe there is a better way forward for our Republic," stated the lawmakers. They call on Trump to ensure resources are available to support women without pressuring them towards abortion.
