U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, has announced her support for Pete Hegseth as the new Secretary of Defense. Following her vote to confirm Hegseth, Senator Capito issued a statement highlighting his commitment to prioritizing military personnel.
"Pete Hegseth has made it clear that he will put our men and women in uniform first as Secretary of Defense," Capito stated. She emphasized Hegseth's experience as a combat veteran and his understanding of the challenges posed by bureaucracy within the Department of Defense. According to Capito, this experience positions him well to implement policies that enhance military effectiveness and innovation.
Capito also mentioned her discussions with Hegseth about his plans to improve military recruitment and strengthen the defense industrial base. "He has also assured me that he will focus on improving military recruitment and revitalizing our defense industrial base so that the 'Arsenal of Democracy' can once again produce the weapon systems we need to deter our adversaries," she said.
The senator expressed her intention to collaborate closely with Hegseth in supporting President Trump's Peace Through Strength agenda. "As a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, I will work closely with Pete to advance President Trump’s Peace Through Strength agenda and to make sure we have the world’s preeminent fighting force," Capito concluded.
Prior to voting, Senator Capito met with Hegseth in December 2024 to discuss his nomination and gain insight into his vision for leading the department.
