The Maier Foundation has donated $150,000 to West Virginia State University to support scholarships for students, according to a March 17 announcement during the university’s Day of Giving and Founders Day celebrations.

The donation aims to increase access to higher education for West Virginia students by providing direct scholarship support and strengthening an existing endowment. Of the total grant, $50,000 will be used for scholarships for in-state students attending WVSU in the 2026-2027 academic year. The remaining $100,000 will go toward further endowing the Allan L. McVey Scholarship Fund.

“I want to thank the Maier Foundation for its generous gift of $150,000. This transformational investment affirms a shared commitment to educational excellence and student success,” said Ericke S. Cage, President of West Virginia State University. “Their support will help create meaningful opportunities for our students, strengthen our academic programs, and help ensure that WVSU continues to serve as a powerful engine of opportunity for our community and beyond.”

The Allan L. McVey Scholarship Fund was established in 2013 and provides financial assistance specifically for West Virginia students at WVSU. It is named after alumnus Allan McVey, who currently serves as West Virginia Insurance Commissioner.

Brad Rowe, Chairman of the Maier Foundation, said: “The Maier Foundation’s primary mission is to support higher education for West Virginia students. Our board was excited to fund need-based scholarships to support talented students at WVSU. This grant will remove financial barriers for students, allowing them to focus on their studies.”

Trey Jones, Vice President for University Advancement and President of the WVSU Foundation, said: “The Maier Foundation’s generosity reflects the strong momentum behind our State of Tomorrow Capital Campaign. This investment expands scholarship opportunities for our students today while strengthening resources that will support their success for years to come. We are grateful for partners like the Maier Foundation who believe in the future we are building at West Virginia State University.”

The contribution is part of WVSU’s ongoing State of Tomorrow Capital Campaign which seeks to raise $25 million in order to enhance student experiences and campus resources.
