Governor Patrick Morrisey and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) have announced that the buck firearms season will begin on Monday, November 24. Hunters are being asked to ensure they have purchased the necessary hunting licenses and stamps before participating.

“Buck firearms season is woven into the fabric of West Virginia,” said Governor Morrisey. “It reflects our respect for the land, our love of the outdoors, and the traditions we pass down from one generation to the next. Here is to a safe and successful season for all.”

The two-week buck firearms season will take place from November 24 through December 7 in every county except Logan, McDowell, Mingo, and Wyoming. These counties remain closed to firearms deer hunting. Hunters are permitted to harvest one buck with a base license but must purchase a Class RG or RRG stamp prior to the start of the season if they wish to harvest a second buck.

“The buck firearms season is a time-honored tradition that brings generations of West Virginians together in the woods each fall,” said WVDNR Director Brett McMillion. “As hunters head back into the woods, we encourage everyone to review the latest regulations, follow the safety guidelines, and look out for one another.”

The WVDNR has reminded hunters that anyone aged 15 or older must possess a valid West Virginia hunting license unless they qualify under resident landowner privileges. A valid form of identification is also required while hunting. Licenses and stamps can be purchased online at WVdnr.gov/buy-a-license. Additional information about deer hunting rules and safety requirements is available at WVdnr.gov/hunting-regulations.

Additionally, WVDNR has brought back its Big Buck Photo Contest for both resident and nonresident youth and adults who legally harvest a buck during any 2025 season. Participants who submit a qualifying photo will be entered into a prize drawing. Prizes include a lifetime hunting license or a state park cabin stay for one resident adult grand prize winner; other winners may receive either a state park cabin stay or Bass Pro Shops prize packages.
